Developmental or line editing? At Portal, the 104-page full-colour literary magazine where I have gained most of my experience, the first round of edits focusses on developmental editing but also involves a significant first stylistic pass to allow for a tight turnaround as the production period spans two months.

I am providing samples of my editorial work below, divided by fiction (the original, a first pass, and a second pass) and nonfiction (the original, a first pass, and the accompanying editorial letter). Feel free to contact me for my full portfolio.

Fiction Editing

For my fiction example, I am showcasing an excerpt from the short fiction “He Sings to Us” by Flynn Connolly Sifton. You can read the final version of this beautiful piece in the print issue of Portal 2025 or here. This is an excerpt of the original piece prior to editing.

This is a first edit (developmental and stylistic) of the same section.

Nonfiction Editing

This year, I had the pleasure of editing the creative nonfiction piece “Hunger Pains”, previously titled “Lessons in Spaghetti”, by Jenna Laughland. Below is an excerpt from the original draft, prior to editing. “Hunger Pains” will be published in Portal 2026, where you can read the final version of this heartfelt piece. Once published, I will also link to it here.

This is my first edit on the piece with a focus on developmental editing while incorporating a first stylistic pass.

This is the editorial letter I wrote for the first edit on “Hunger Pains”.
